Egon is gone.....

I
Yesterday was a sad day for fans of the Ghostbusters franchise. Harold Ramis, better known as Egon Spengler in the "Ghostbusters" films has passed away at the age of 69.  Ramis was also known for his work in directing and writing. Movies he wrote and acted in included "Stripes", National Lampoon's Animal House", and "Vacation". (He didn't star in the former, but he had a cameo in the latter.) He also directed films like "Club Paradise" and "Groundhog Day".

Deep Purple - Highway Star (Isolated Guitar Solo)

Today's video comes from British band "Deep Purple." "Highway Star" was the first track on the album "Machine Head" and was released in March of 1972. Organist Jon Lord has stated that the organ and guitar solos were based on Bach-like chord sequences.

The Who - Baba O'Riley

Another video today comes from The Who's famous album "Who's Next". Baba O'Riley was the first track on the album, and was later used as the theme song for CSI: New York. People often mislabel the song as "Teenage wasteland" due to the lyric being repeated in the song itself.

Sappy - Nirvana (Isolate Bass and Vocals)

Yes....it's a very unlikely pair, I admit, but for some reason, I couldn't link the isolated bass track that I have found on Youtube. Anyway, the song Sappy was released as a single in 1993 for the AIDS benefit album "No Alternative", but was recorded during the "In Utero" sessions. Originally, the song was called "Verse Chorus Verse" until it's re-release in the "With the Lights Out" box set gave it the name "Sappy."

Pinball Wizard (Isolated Drums)

Today's video involves another classic by "The Who". From the rock opera "Tommy", "Pinball Wizard" was the 3rd track on the 3rd side on the album. The album itself had four sides, and had the running time of 75:12.

Klaxons release second song from third album.

In my last blog post, I expressed my dissapointment with the new single from the british experimental band "Klaxons". Well, their newest song "Children of the Sun" pretty much brings back my faith that the Klaxons can still sound amazing without the use of New Rave. The song still shows the the band is in their familiar roots, but they still experiment with different types of sounds, with a drum loop that sounds very hip hop-ish, for example. And there are a few prominant guitars in the song, giving this song sort of a 70s rock sound to it.

Good Morning, Good Morning (Isolated Drums)

Today's video is another Beatles classic, and this times it's another Sgt. Pepper's tune! Good Morning, Good Morning was the 4th track on the second side of the "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album, and the song came to be when John Lennon heard a commercial for the Corn Flakes cereal. Another thing worth noting is Ringo Starr's use of double bass in the song.

Young Man Blues - Live at Leeds (Isolated Drums)

Today's video is a very interesting track. This comes from The Who's 1970 "Live at Leeds" album, which is considered by critics to be one of the best live albums of all time. The "Live at Leeds" albums are usually recorded at the Leeds festival in the UK.

20th Century Boy - T-Rex (Isolated Guitar)

Today's song comes from Classic Rock band "T-Rex". The song "20th Century Boy" was originally released as a single in 1973, but was later included as a bonus track on the album "Tanx". The band originally went under the name "Tyrannosaurus Rex", but later shortened their name for their 5th album.

Klaxons make their comeback after almost 4 years!

A long time ago, I used to be obsessed with a band called the "Klaxons". I would play their first album "Myths of the Near Future" religiously, with it's crazy, yet interesting British space/grunge/whatever/pop. They released their second album "Surfing the Void" in 2010, and that was oddly enough, the last we heard of the band, save for an EP of unreleased stuff on Christmas Day of that same year.

Now, the band has returned with a new album, and their first track off the album has been released. The song "There Is No Other Time" premiered on the Zane Lowe show on BBC radio and it's...well...pretty bad, by the band's standards. Now, I've been a fan of this band because of how experimental their music and lyrics were. But this? This is a horrible mixed, horrible sung, horrible organized song with painfully bad lyrics that makes me question how the rest of the album sounds. I don't know, this might be one of those things where after I listen to it a few times, I grow to like it, but I honestly can't see my beloved Klaxons creating something akin to a British boy-band. (Even though I don't mind One Direction.)
